Mysterious wall nubs...safe to grind off?

I have a ~100 year old brick Philly rowhouse with plaster interior walls. There are a couple spots in the house with these strange wall nubs that protrude from the wall (see pics attached). They appear to be made out of metal and as if they are the end of some rod that goes through the wall.

I'm not sure they're purpose and if it's wise to grind them down with an angle grinder...can anyone clue me in on the purpose of these and if it would be safe to grind them down for appearances sake?

Thanks!

Do not touch them.
Look on the outside of the wall and see if you see some type of plate on the other side of the wall. It may look like this.

There's dozens of other styles. it could look like a star, circle, square ECT.

Can you get a picture of the outside wall in that area.

They look as if they may be pipes that were capped off at some point in time.

Can you gently remove some paint using a knife or file? Only go so far as the layer of paint. If it is copper or brass it is not likely to be structural. Please let us know what is on the other side.

Looks to low for lighting, but could be for old heaters.

Capped off gas line is most likely the answer. I started to write a step by step guide for safe removal but encouraging a homeowner to work on a pipe that likely contains gas does not seem prudent even if you follow precautions like shutting off the main gas shut off valve. A pro could do this job easily and I am uncertain if working with gas lines is a homeowner permitted activity where you live.
If it doesn't bother you that much, you could simply leave it alone.

Thanks guys, there is no star bolt or similar on the outside wall so it's probably an old gas line. Thanks for the heads up...glad I consulted you guys before attacking it with an angle grinder...the sparks from the grinder could have caused some serious injury/damage!

Owe you all one...
