Mudding and taping

Going to be plugging up an opening in my mom's kitchen. Going to put up the drywall, mud and tape of course. My question is...how far up do I go with the tape that meets the finished ceiling? The ceiling is smooth I believe. TIA

Depends on where the hole is.

Unless you have really low ceiling there's no need for any tape to be on the ceiling.
Your going to have to add a bottom plate, and in most cases 2 X 4's at the top and sides of the old opening to have something to attach the drywall to.
Add the top and bottom pieces first then the studs.
That way the top piece will be wedged in place and not going to move.

Cover the entire joint. If the joint goes all the way to the ceiling then go all the way to the ceiling with tape. You could stay back 1/8 or 1/4 inch to avoid messing the ceiling if you want.
