mixing tile and drywall

I Have a fireplace mantel that I am just installing drywall and putting a plaster like coating called american clay). This coating is not more than a 1/16 inch thick. My wife (always making my life difficult) wants to have a strip of tile run horizontally along this mantel. The tile is a quarter inch thick.

how would I do this so the tile looks to be at the same level as the plaster. I am thinking I would use 5/8 and 1/2" drywall to build the different thickness to inset the tile. I would imagine I would need to tape these drywall together as well?

The difference between 1/2" and 5/8" will only give you 1/8" difference which will leave the tile 1/16" higher. Will this work for you? What are you using to back the tile?

Otherwise I would fir out the studs I guess.
