Jt. Compound over Mastic?

I pulled off a few tiles from the bathroom that had mastic. Couple pulled off down to drywall, others had mastic still on them. I would like to finish with some Jt. Compound but will it adhere to the mastic and the should I prep the torn drywall? I am just pulling off one row.

Broken tile / wall pics...

Please advise.

are you just trying to have smooth drywall there instead of a row of tile? from the looks of it i wouldn't just put joint compound over the mastic, i cant see that turning out good.
