How to prepare drywall joints for orange peel?

Can I simply mud and tape the joints when applying orange peel, or will I have to float? I've attempted to float in the past and just made a mess of things!

gonna have to float some cause if not it will have dips. the orange peel will follow the dips where the seams are. youll only get better as you practice your floating skills

You'll be happier with the finished product if you take the time to float all your joints out rather than trying to hide them with texture which will still show when it's done and painted.
Try several thinner coats floating rather than putting too much on at once. Each coat will progressively get easier as it flattens out more each time. With thin coats you won't really have to sand much either, mainly scrape off ridges/knife marks before the next coat and sand the last coat before texturing. For floating you can even "slightly" thin the mud to make it flow easier.
