How to emove can light without damaging drywall

Late 80s vintage home. Can light has stopped working. I cannot remove the housing from the ceiling to get to the wiring to see what problem is. Do not want to damage ceiling. Appears to be held by tension in the drywall. Suggestions?

Nash, Welome to the forum.

Cans come in all different diameters and as new or remodel models.
Can you post a pic?

With the bulb removed, can you see any 1/4" hex head screws in the sides of the can?

All can lights are designed to be removed to access the wiring. There are either screws holding it in place as palibob said, it is held in place by spring tension, or if it is a remodel can, by spring clips holding it to the ceiling surface.

the housing is generally not intended to be removed but the wiring is accessible through the trim hole.

It sounds like you may have the trim out already. Do you?

Work on a few of those and you will see that electricians really do work for their money, especially if you have large hands.
