Has anyone ever covered their windows with drywall? We have 2 windows in our closet and we need to be able to use the wall space where the windows are for closet fixtures. We are looking to cover the windows with drywall but still have the window "look like a window" from the outside of the house. Any advice on how to do this exactly (and how avoid condensation on the walls behind the drywall & any other problems covering these could cause) would be helpful.
I would cover the opening with a piece of 1/4 or 1/2 inch plywood and paint it the same as the closet wall. Attach it with screws so it can be taken down to access the window if needed.
Covering over windows is a bad Idea. I have never seen it work out, heat build-up and condensation issues abound.
Hope somebody else has come up with a system that works.
It's never going to look "right" from the outside. I would remove the window, re-stud the opening, sheath, side, insulate and drywall. It will save lots of,problems down the road.
for the outside view you can either black out the windows of use a window covering such as blinds that fit within the framing or curtains cut to fit that way. Then you can patch in some studs to lay the drywall across.
as has been warned; there are often problems with doing this though. If you do not install a vapor barrier you will get moisture migration into this new made cavity and in the winter, it will freeze and then upon thawing make a pool at the bottom of the cavity. This will lead to damage. Even if you do install a moisture barrier, due to the lack of insulation value you may end up with a patch of frost on your wall covering the window as the cold migrates into the cavity causing the humidity in your home to condense and possibly freeze where the window is.
Have done it many times, paint the inside of the window black. If you don't it really looks odd from outside
