Help with replacing backsplash - cement board problem


I want to replace all the cement board panels with new ones.
The problem is that the old cement board goes down about 3" below the top of the counter. We werent planning on removing counter/cabinets as this is way above skill level.

here is a picture:



at this point i am thinking i go buy a sawzall (as i will most likely use it for whatever) and just cut it nice and square so replacement pieces will be easy to pop in.
