Find and snap lines,on the existing ceiling, where the joists are---

measure and cut your sheet and screw it to the joists using 1 3/4" drywall screws---
Add drywall adhesive if you use 3/8 I suggest using 1/2" no glue needed with 1/2"
Use a drywall lift if you don"t have a helper.

Hang Drywall Ceiling?

Easier to hang the drywall as Mike instructed. If it really is calcimine, it is a real b*^ch to remove.

Thanks....

Calcamine was a chalk based paint they used in the 19th century to paint over ceilings. It was efective to cover up soot stains from burning coal all winter to stay warm. Most H.O would do it in the spring, kind of like a spring cleaning project. You can't paint over it because the paint won't adhere to the chaulk. It will crack, peel, chip and fail.

We already treated the ceiling in the enrty-way by scraping and wahing.
The dining room is too big and the H.O wants us to rock over it.

Hang Drywall Ceiling?

Have you considered running resilient channel (rc channel) perpendicular to the joists and then affixing the drywall perpendicular to the rc channel?

You don't loose much ceiling height and will level off quite nicely where there may be any waves in the ceiling.
