Garage Firewall protection material

I had a kitchen upgrade wherein the sink was moved...the contractor went through garage wall to install plumbing. There is a 2X2 opening in wall that was only covered with a piece of corregated cardboard. What is the appropriate type of protection for this area that will allow protection as well as access to the area.
