Gap between drywall and baseboard

Hello all,

New member and first-time home owner. My wife and I just bought a house that needs some work. We hired a contractor for the stuff I didn't want to tackle (bathroom/boiler/plumbing/electrical). The rest I think we can do at our own pace.

In one hallway, the previous owner put up some mirror tiles with double-sided tape. Most of the tiles were cracked.... so down they came. But We discovered a 2" gap between the bottom of the drywall and the baseboard. The gab is only a foot long.

I did a search online for fixes, most results were for caulking between the baseboard and drywall. Any suggestions or links to relative articles?

Gap between drywall and baseboard

Why not pull the baseboard, fill the gap with drywall tape and texture to match?

Gap between drywall and baseboard

(I can see why pictures would help),

The gap is similar to this thread: Best Way to Fill Gap At Bottom?

But my gap comes above the baseboard and it does not run the entire length of the wall. It looks like they used a scrap piece of drywall to finish the wall. The foot wide piece is about 6" above the floor and 2" above the baseboard. I have no idea what is keeping the baseboard from being kicked in (if anything). This section is at an outside corner, the otherside of the corner is covered with a thin fiberboard (not sure what its called) held on by chair guards. So I have no idea if the other side of the corner has the same problem.

A 2" gap is uncaulkable. Stick in a strip of drywall there (use furring strips to attach to existing drywall - Google as needed.) This will need joint tape to patch.
