Firring Old Walls Before Drywall

Is there an accepted method to firring old walls (where correction is not feasible) prior to drywall? What to use? The taper varies from 0" to 7/8" over 74" (ht.). Something that will not split? Thank you!!

Generally, the best method for such a variation is to build a new sleeper wall over the wall itself....if the loss of space is acceptable. Other than that, you generally are going to have to cut each individual stud (16" O.C.)to match the area and to create plumb.

Atlantic's right. I'd suggest building a wall out in front of concrete/block walls that is perfectly plumb.

We have clay and expansive soils around here, which leads to various foundation movement problems. Therefore, I'm never an advocate of fastening furring strips to foundation walls. A 1/2" gap between the stud and the foundation wall gives that foundation a little wiggle room and structurally isolates the basement wall from it. That way every tiny movement your foundation makes doesn't telegraph through your finished wall.

Framing a 2"x4" wall also gives you room for necessary plumbing, electrical, and insulation. The only way to do it correctly.
