Fireace stone surround

Hello all,

I just finished drywall ing my basement and installed a gas fireplace into a bump out alcove. I will be installing a stone surround around the fireplace. Do I have to rip out the drywall and install backer board in its place? Or can I simply put felt and mettle mesh on the wall for the stone to adhere to?
