Feathering drywall to door frame

I recently removed paneling from a room and replaced it with drywall. In this room there is a sliding glass door with a metal frame to my outside portch. Because the drywall is thicker than my paneling was the wood molding that I have around the frame of the glass door is not lining up with the metal frame. About a 1/4 inch gap. I am not sure if I can feather the drywall in so that the mold lines up with the metal frame. If so can anyone give me some advice on how to do this.

If I'm understanding his right (maybe not) you can put corner bead on and mud it.

you will need to add a jamb extension 1/4" to bring the plane of the jamb in line with the face/plane of the drywall ( backside of trim). then your trim will sit against drywall and jamb. might need to glue extension because it is a metal jamb/frame or pre attach extension to backside of trim before hand...
