Existing drywall two inches above the floor

Hi,

I am redoing a closet and getting ready to put a new floor in. After I removed the baseboard I realized the drywall is about 2" from the subfloor. The previous owner had put some scrap board behind the base (see pic below) to have something to nail into but did not tape it so it was a mess. I've cleaned it out (see pic below) but not sure what to do now. Should I patch in new drywall, put a board around, something else? Any guidance would be very appreciated.

I bet if you measure from the floor to the ceiling you will find it was more then 8' tall. I'd clen off that area so there was no humps and just tape and mud it. Your just trying to stop air leaks. One coat should do it, then sand it flat.

If baseboard covers it just rip the right thickness of plywood (1/2" or 5/8" often) and put it in gap. Then baseboard over it.

joecaption you are right on the height - just measured and it's 8' 2". Guess they figured why tape/mud if you can't see it.

mae-ling, also a good point. The baseboard does cover it. I wonder if there would be any downside with a wood fill-in.

Put the base board back up and forget about it, it's done. I am sure you have more pressing issues that you could worry about

You need to put at least a small block of plywood or something along to bottom just keep your base from tilting back at the bottom.

Fix'n it

inside wall =just put the base board back on. outside wall = caulk it then put the base board back on.
if you are going to paint, paint first, but after the caulk.

I agree. If it's in interior wall, just put the base back up. It won't be a problem. If it is an exterior wall, seal it up so you have no air leaking through then put the base back up.
