drywall repair help

I'm trying to redo my back splash in my kitchen, so I tore down the old ugly plastic one. When I did, the glue ripped a lot of the paint off the drywall and now it's peeling real bad. How do I fix this? Basically the white has peeled off in many places and now there is what I can only explain as a brown paper bag type of material showing through. I plan on painting my back splash instead of putting tile over it. Thank you!

I'm no drywall pro, but others have recommended a product like this. Available at that Big Orange Box store and elsewhere.

drywall repair help

I've repaired much worse with nothing but drywall mud and time.

Remove all loose edges and start skimming in thin coats.

I'd just replace it with new drywall.
Less materials and end up with a smoother finish.
Not suppose to " start skimming in thin coats"
You would cut out the loose areas and seal it with the primmer ZZZZZ suggested before trying to fill it in to seal it.
