Drywall or plaster wall

How do I know whether the existing wall is drywall or plaster ?

I have a wall which I want to extend by removing the door in the middle of that wall. So basiclly, once I know what type of wall it is, I would like to add a wall in the place of door and also extend the wall for another one feet in the end.. Is that possible ?

I am just thinking of not to demolish the whole wall to rebuild again.
