Drywall mystery... solved?

So I posted another post and got a lot of answers about my home.

One big question no one was sure of was... what was this?

I decided to do some holes to find out. I started with the side. Removed some drywall, only to be stopped by wood. I drilled a hole there, only to find the wood frame to extend quite far. I then decided to make a hole on the top.

Here is what is inside that hole...

No idea what that green stuff is for...

I looked into that hole and saw some cuts in the framing and old drywall. This was built in after the wall was put up.

I then noticed ** AROUND ** the box

Here is my theory:

A different home owner / hobbyist wanted a new outlet. They cut framing and drywall to fish wire. They then built this box to either restore structural integrity or because they were unsure of how to repair the hole.

Odd theory, I know, and I would love to hear any more!!

I duuno, that is so weird. Its probably a box someone built so that later on someone would take the time to investigate only to be yet more baffled! Hopefully, an expert can come along and say what it really might be. Unfortunately, we may never know!

And what do you plan to do now. It's looks horrible and would be a simple fix.

Drywall mystery... solved?

Here's my theory -

They installed the over sized door, removed a heater duct or damaged some carpeting and it was easier to build a box than repair the carpet ?
(or trying to restore structural integrity after removing the framing and header to make the door wider ?

Or, even though it seems too far away and probably should have been on the top...but could it have been some kinda of auto door opener that was attached to a larger door?
