Drywall issue above shower enclosure

We have a 32" square shower enclosure. The walls above the shower are sheet-rocked. There is some water damage where the shower wall meets the sheetrock. The damage is just the sheetrock paper coming off the sheetrock, but it is unsightly. Is there anyway to fix this without removing the shower enclosure and replacing the sheetrock?

Cut the loose paper off seal the exposed drywall with Gardz and proceed with finishing as planned.

Here is a picture of the worst spot. Mostly cosmetic. I would like it all white again. I live in SW Iowa, it is humid here.

Can I cut the paper, skim coat with drywall mud and sand (to even out the surface), and then coat with Gardz? Then paint it white.

Yes but you might want to Gardz also before you skim, it will seal the cut edge of the paper so it doesn't come loose again from the moisture in your mud.
