Drywall in garage question.

Hi,

I am building a house and am so far over budget. The builder will only insulating and dry walling the garage. Can i just paint the dry wall to protect it. It's only a garage so I don't care about taping and mudding it.

If the garage is attached to the home: The walls, or ceilings that are connected to the home, must have at least a single coat of tape applied to ALL seams (fire-tape coat). This is required by Building Code.

Insulated walls in the garage: If the walls/ceilings are insulated, they will require at least a single coat of applied tape over all sheetrock seams (fire-tape coat). This is required by Building Code.

(BTW - The average amount of budget-overage, for most larger, detailed projects is 20%. Unless, you change, or add a lot to the original designs of the project)

Drywall in garage question.

Painting is not required, but it does help protect the drywall. It can always be done later. But as stated above, firecode drywall/taping is required in an attached garage.
