drywall in difficult space

I am trying to install a strip of drywall over a window as part of a basement renovation. the area is just 26 inches by 2 inches. the drywall screws will not go far enough. I think there may be metal around the window,. Is an adhesive the only solution to that spot?

Use shorter screws.
