Drywall ceiling issue

I am installing a new bathroom vent/light in the ceiling. The hangers you stretch out of course and nail into the studs. Now the problem is the ceiling was installed with 2 sheets of 1/2 inch drywall so the ceiling thickness is 1". With the vent in place it is half way in between the 2 sheets of drywall. Only thing im thinking is that the ceiling would need to be ripped off and get re-sheeted with (1) half inch sheet. My other concern would be after i do that, there would now be a half inch gap between the 4 sides of the walls to the ceiling. Any input that could help me out here?

Tape and mud would easily cover that gap,or some crown molding.

What I do not understand is,

With the vent in place it is half way in between the 2 sheets of drywall.

How is the cover attached? The drywall should run flat across the vent, the vent cover will sit flat against the drywall.

To me it sounds like you need to remove the cover and patch drywall across and re-install the cover.
Maybe I am reading your post wrong.

Should not be an issure.
It was suppost to be 5/8 on a ceiling not 2, layers of 1/2.
The trim rings are flexable on how there mounted to account for differant ceiling thicknesses.

Here's a pic to see what i mean. When in place the vent is flush with the 1st layer but the 2nd layer protrudes. So its a little recessed into the ceiling and cant put a cover on.

Thank you sublime and joe. Im actually just gonna rip it down and re-sheet with 5/8. Then im gonna do both, tape and mud the gap and also use crown. The wife likes the crowning.

Whole lot of work for nothing in my opinion, you can patch the sides and install the cover.

But then it is obvious whoever installed the sheet rock did not install it correctly around the fan.

Or more likely, the fan was a remodel project and they never finished the drywall they needed to open up to install it.

If everything else is fine, just patch and finish the drywall, if you have other more serious issues, then drop and replace the ceiling.
Based on the photo, would not replace ceiling because of the fan.

Actually thought of something else. Im thinking of shimming a 1/2" piece of would (glue and screw it) and attach it to bottom of joist. Then the fan would sit 1/2" lower and flush with the 2nd layer of drywall.

how is your fan cover attached?
I could be wrong but do not think it will cover that big of a hole, so will be some patching.
The pic looks perfectly normal to me, needed to cut the hole oversize to install the new fan, then just never finished patching the hole.

So lowering the fan will not help if the cover is not large enough to cover the hole.
I have seen 2 ways to mount the cover, some are spring clips that will give you room to adjust the cover up and down to allow for 1" of drywall.
Some just use screws and you can always get longer screws.

Lowering the fan is not a issue, is just if the grille will cover the hole, looking at the pic I do not think it will.

just lower your mounting bracket 1/2" lower
