Drywall between wall and steps

I'm trying to put drywall between my steps to the basement and wall. I'm having difficulties removing the old drywall because its hard to get behind the steps.

So with that being said, I can't just slide a whole sheet in there. I need to cut the sheet so it goes with the steps. I tried a whole sheet but couldn't get it to slide in.


Just wondering if anyone else has had to do this before. If so, any tips?
