Drywall?

Just bought a home built in the 70's. My husband and I are remodeling and our next task is the bathroom. The walls in the bathroom are not painted or wallpapered. We think that instead of drywall they put up a patterned wall. If that makes sense? We want to re do it but not sure if we can paint right over it or if we should take it down and take the chance of having to re drywall. Has anyone Dealt with this walking before or heard if it? Also any suggestions is appreciated

The trouble is that we have no idea what a patterned wall is (at least I don't).
Do you have any pictures?

Titanman, I'm visioning a patterned wall, as something similar to a 1/8 covered paneling, with a design on it of some sort.? maybe the op can remobe a switchplate cover or receptivle cover and see how thick the material is?
