Sure, why not?
Unless this is a crack or a hole your trying to fix you may be better off with paper tape it's thinner and easyer to finish.

No, it should not be used with ready mixed compound from a bucket.

It should be used with a quickset (mixed onsite and rapidly sets-up).

I cannot tell you how many times I get called onto a Home Owner DIY job, and asked why the drywall seams are all cracking.

My first question is always: "Did you use mesh with readymix from a bucket directly over the mesh?"

The answer every time: ...."Yes, why?"

Use paper tape with ready mix.

And why not. I've been using it for about 30 years when I did not have hot mud around to use and never had a problum.

Then you must be blessed and I have been seeing things, and hearing things wrong, on all those times I've gotten calls to people's homes.....

There obviously appears to be some conditions, where there are problems using ready mix (as the base coat directly over mesh tape at seams), as I stated (from multiple first-hand inspections & observations at different property locations). So the best thing to do is to stick with the paper tape when using ready mix.

Leading Drywall Supply Manufacturers also list mesh-tapes to be used with quick-setting compounds (not ready mixes - for first coats over seams). See below.

Example # 1: From the Sheetrock Brand Website regarding the use of their mesh tape:
Quote:
SHEETROCK® fiberglass drywall tape .....To finish the joint first coat the tape with SHEETROCK DURABOND® setting-type or one of the SHEETROCK Easy Sand™ lightweight setting-type joint compounds.

Example # 2: From the National Gypsum Website regarding the use of their mesh tape:
Quote:
ProForm Fiberglass Mesh Tape is self-adhering fiberglass mesh tape for use with Quick Set, FasTrack and other setting-type joint compounds.
