Corner Beads

Is there a preference for the type of corner beads? I bought some vinyl base ones at a box store. But I noticed that there were several other options including all metal ones and some that seemed like they were comprised of paper and maybe metal? Also, what is the best way to attached them to the corners. Drywall screws or nails? Thanks

Depends on your application. For regular outside corners, I personally like the metal bead. They can be installed with either screws or nails (as long as the nails are made for it, not just any old 6p nail).

I have never used the paper type so I can only speak of what I have experience with.

Okay. I just don't have a lot of experience with either/or.

For a small job you should use metal. It's cheaper than no coat ultra flex which IMO is the best out there. Make sure if you use metal to first coat it with hot mud (durabond) any horizontals like under a beam or a soffit get a tape under them. Metal is prone to cracking much more so than paper

I didn't think they got screwed OR nailed......

Paper Laminated Metal Bead ONLY, EVER.

Glue it on with Taping Compound.

NEVER EVER USE METAL BEAD - PERIOD.

Paper faced metal bead is the best in my opinion...

I hear you both. I was too lazy to take back the half dozen vinyl corner beads and get the paper faced ones. I thought: 'the hell with it' - either way, I got very little experience mudding corners and I can screw up just as well with one as opposed to the other. Some of the demos on Youtube by professionals raised my esteem for this type of work to a new level. They make it look so easy. I ran some compound over about 15' of corner bead using and 8" knife. My main concern is that I may have put on too much. Question: is the outside part of the corner supposed to be covered with compound on the first run?

The very outside edge really doesn't cover with mud, it would get chipped off every time someone bumped it. Paint will cover it....

I used the vinyl base ones with no issues. No cracking.
