Hello,

I just damaged about a 4"x4" area on my ceiling. See the picture for the details. How do I go about fixing something like this? Thank you for your help.

Ceiling Repair help

Looks like standard vintage finish and bed coats of plaster. As far as a fix you can use standard joint compound (sold in buckets for ~$12); or durabond (sold in bags for ~$8) or structolite (sold in bags ~$15 but not a good option for you). You can also buy a small pail of joint compound for around $7. This would be your easiest option. If you don't own a 4" or 6" taping blade you'll also need to buy that.
However, the darkened color of the inner plaster and the rust stain (presumably around a nail) indicates a water leak problem. You should investigate that prior to any repair.

The hard part will be trying to match that texture. Nearly impossivle to get a perfect match. Unless you can get the person that did it in the first place to show you how they did it. There's about 100 differant ways to apply texture.
Most often the whole ceiling has to be retextured to get a perfect match.
