Ceiling Repair
We had a re-occuring leak around our chimney that I think is finally sorted out. Obviously, I didn't want to fix the ceiling until I knew the leak had been fixed. This photo is of my appears that it's a paper covering that's peeled off.
The house is approx. 75 years old, so I'm not sure what this is or how to repair it.
Any idea's would be much appreciated.

your going to have to tear until there is no more damage
square up your tear out.
fix any surprises you've uncovered(electrical, plumbing, etc)
measure the thickness buy drywall and shim to get it smooth with the exisiting
tape and skim
sand and paint

It looks like just paint peeling and some of the drywall paper came off. Once your sure no more leak prime with Gardz skim coat affected area with ultra lite joint compound, sand, prime, and paint. Oh and I almost forgot scrap off all the loose paint, and you will probably need to paint the whole ceiling.

That is wall paper up there, It needs to come off. I do not know why it is red though:huh:

I think it's red because of a leak and it stained.

It's definitely some kind of paper. I can see seams over the whole ceiling.
It also looks as old as the ceiling...did people used to paper the ceilings for some reason? The house is about 75 years old.

Here's another room. It seems that someone, at some point (possibly at the beginning of the house) papered the walls and ceiling.
Anyone know if this was common. I sure makes things a pain in the ass now...

Wallpaper on ceilings was a common practice in my area. I can remember seeing done as late as the early 60's.
