Build up to make up paneling removed

Hey everybody! I want to help my brothers work on the drywall in a closet and have used the joint compound a little bit better than I did on wood paneling on the opposite wall. I have covered with three coats and sanded over half of it smooth and I am proud of how it looks. My question is how can I build up the outside edges of my new closet. One side where a doorway is looks good on all side. The angle on the same wall has that metal stuff showing in some places and some dips. Can I put on a few layers and sand after each one to build it up? Help me out if you can. Thanks
