brown drywall coated in gray cement like compound

Hello Everyone .

2 weeks ago My family bought a house built in 1982. Due to ugly wallpapers, we decided to paint the walls. When we stripped the wallpapers it has brown drywall coated in gray cement like compound. Is this lead or asbestos? or just lightly covered in cement?

Please Help, My family's first house, and I'm scared..... no money to hire inspectors.

Thank You.

Asbestos and lead were banned by the EPA in the late '70s, so you should be ok. Don't know what you have exactly.... Can you post a pic??

Sounds like a skim coating to me.

Yeah, I'm just kind of curious what the "cement compound" might be. Thinset, maybe?? And the brown drywall might be exterior "gyp" board. It comes in 2'x8' lengths, so if it's only 2' wide, that answers that question...
