Behind Bathroom Mirrors

I had two of those huge glued to the wall mirrors that I want to replace with hanging mirrors. One of the mirrors came off in one piece, the other came off in 3. I hope I posted a pic to show what the wall looks like behind the mirror. I can't take a pic of the other one because the mirror is too heavy for me to move...gotta get some help with that one.

Should I try to remove the mastic and repair the drywall or cut out that section of drywall and hang a new one? Will a newbie diy-er (me) be able to do that??

NOTE: The big hole in the middle was already there...I didn't pull that off with the mirror. The other wall doesn't have a big hole in the middle like this one...

Thanks for your input.
