Approaching a repair to a large plaster hole

I am a complete newbie when it comes to home repair issues such as this. Unfortunately, I'm the one responsible for the repair.

How do I approach repairing this wall? Are there any issues that are readily apparent that might make the repair more painful than I'm expecting?

Start with removing any loose plaster around the hole---spray the wood lath with a little water---apply a coat of 20 minute easy sand--(powdered bag mix)

Build us the hollow with more coats of easy sand--

Finish with Multi Purpose (green lid) --lightly scuff sand the paint first to give the mud a better place to grab.

Regular (brown bag) DuraBond 90 is the best for plaster repair. It dries as hard as plaster. You'll likely have to find a drywall supply to get it though. Not many places carry it any more since the EasySand came out....
