Applying mud over existing orange peel texture

I am a DIY person trying to figure out the best way to add texture to orange peel textured walls. I have looked at venetian plaster (synthetic and real) as well as texturing mud. From what I have read, the mud route would be to buy joint compound, water it down, apply it in desired fashion over the existing wall finish, and paint. The venetian route is to apply a 2-3 layers and burnish. Has anyone done either of these methods over finished orange peel texture? If so, do you have any advice/guidance?
Thanks!
