here is a pic of a wall im redoing.
drywall meets plaster wall.
its uneven by 1/4 inch so i have to fill it in to make it even.

the space i have to get into is about 1 1/2". i cant seem to find a putty knife small enough to fit to smooth out the mud evenly.

does anyone have any tricks i can try or suggestions?

Got a real mess there. Sure looks like someone did not know your suppose to add shims before the drywall is installed so it comes out even with the wall.
Going to have to use hot mud to fill in the gap across that whole area, not just there the step is.
Going to need a whole lot wider knife then 1-1/2 to get that one right.
