5/Th's vs 1/2" sound reduction?

I'm in the process of finishing the basement. I figured on 5/Th's drywall on the ceilings. My question is how much greater is the sound deadening using 5/8 over 1/2"? I don't expect it to be dead silence, but I have a 15 year old and when this project is finished I expect her to have her friends over playing music, giggling and yelling etc. So I would like to reduce the volume when we are upstairs. I'm thinking of an insulation between the joist. I know there are great ways if money isn't an issue, but I'm looking to minimize sound some and maximize my dollars as well. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

5/Th's vs 1/2" sound reduction?

I've done a several of recording studios and condos for sound proofing.
Using resultant metal channel can reduce the sound by up to 80%.
As long as there is no height issues I'd go with resilient channel and 5/8" drywall.
