20 min mud in full bucket of water to prevent drying?

suppose you mix 2 gallons of 20 minute drywall mud in a 5 gallon bucket and there's like 3 cups of mud left in the bucket while you're busy doing something else. Can you fill the bucket with water before it cures and then add more plaster powder to the water and re-use the previous mud that you watered down, or is it a sort of one-time use thing and you have to throw away what you don't use within 20 mins? thanks.

Top of page 2

Paint brushes can be kept from drying by suspending them in a 5 gal. bucket with a lid and a cup of water.

Hot mud will set submerged in water so the answer is no.

Hot mud will still set up under water since it drys by a chemical reaction not evaporation. Is a bad idea to even add water to it once it starts to set up on you if you make it too thin it will be brittle when it dries. May get by adding a little once.

Thanks. I'd still fill the bucket real quick after the last amount is used instead of having to scrape it all out for the next batch because i'd be final touching/sponging the mud that's been applied probably longer than it takes for the leftovers to dry in the bucket.

The top of page 2 describes a technique for drying compound, not setting compound. You can't do that with setting compound because it sets while wet.
