Renovating the Mancave/Garage

Well, my girlfriend has been complaining that I should renovate the bathroom since my last thread here:
http://www.diychatroom.com/f49/renov...-7-days-54678/

So, I did what any man would do... I started work on the garage! Now, being a car guy the garage is of high importance to me.. so I spent about a month doing this.

Beginning:

I patched the big hole, and pulled down the pegboard... and found some HORRIBLE wiring.

So while fixing everything up, I added four 4' t4 fluorescent lights, rewired the garage, and purchased some interlocking tiles.

Here's the final pics. To give you an idea of how bright it is, the top pic was taken at night with no flash:

As part of my compromise.. I am starting the bathroom today. I still need to finish painting the molding, doors, and install my coleman garage shelving units (see below). Oh well, I guess that will have to wait until the spring.

Hey guys, pretty new hear. I am in the process of residing my brothers house which had rotted t111 and sill plates. So I lifted walls replacing sill plates, putting in new windows and installing 3/4 plywood for exterior sheathing. I installed hardie plank siding and azek trim. I am almost done, did not paint trim yet. I did alot of research on this site before doing the siding since it was a first for me and would like to thank you guys. BTW. I hand nailed all the siding, no waves at all :)

Closed on my house yesterday and drank a lot of very tasty bourbon on the porch with my real estate agent afterward . Tomorrow the cleaning and demolition begins! The house was built c. 1925. 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, unfinished basement & detached carriage house - 2 floors.

Some of the work will be done by a contractor, the rest will be DIM'd. Pictures will be here.

Work to be done -

clean. lots and lots of cleaning
refinish / paint porch & porch ceiling
demo kitchen flooring
move appliances & services, move doorways in kitchen (contractor)
demo 2nd floor bath
fix 2nd floor bath & plumbing (contractor)
remove 2 brick chimneys (old stove exhausts)
new HVAC (contractor)
paint everything
new kitchen floor
new kitchen cabinets (cabinet guy)
refinish existing kitchen cabinets
finish flooring throughout (long leaf pine)
clean up stair case & refinish
built-in storage under stairs
closet systems
build a rack for my turntables (woo!)
yard work
build a deck / fire pit

in the detached garage:
fix 3 doors (one by contractor)
shore up walls (contractor)
throw away tons of left over crap
new lighting
set up a wood shop (woo!)

I'm sure I am forgetting some things. Now the DIY asking can really begin! The good (or bad?) news is that the house is across the street from 2 eateries / bars!

We will be laying engineered hardwood or laminate in March at bonus time as well as replacing the furniture with something chocolate brown!

We are also painting the dining room. The hubby pick the color....Honey Pecan I believe...and I'm not sure if I'm in love with it! :(
Before:

And after...we still need to put another coat around the ceiling and get the curtains back up. The new flooring will also be going in here!

Wheel Chair Ramp to Curved Step

This is a ramp that is to be temporarily used as a removable assisted wheel chair ramp that I built for an acquaintance. The ramp cannot be used as a self propelled wheel chair ramp because the slope is 7° which is more than the maximum ADA slope of ~ 5° (1:12 slope). In this case the 1:12 slope was not possible because the overall ramp length is limited by the room dimensions.
http://www.mobility-advisor.com/whee...amp-specs.html

The biggest challenge was devising the transition to the curved step and plush carpet. The solution was to connect the crescent shaped transition piece to the ramp 7° bevel edge, by using pocket screws and Titebond II glue on the bottom side of the ramp.
http://www.amazon.com/Kreg-R3-Pocket.../dp/B000J43A7W

The biggest asset was building the 32" wide ramp (ADA says s/b 36") using 1-1/8" Sturd-I-Floor Plywood. This is tremendously strong subfloor plywood that is popular here in California.
http://shop.mccoys.com/Building%20Ma...nderlay/p.1767

The biggest aid was using a Festool TS55 saw to rip down the 4x8 1-1/8”,plywood sheets. I also built two shorter ramps for outside. The 1-1/8” thickness is only available in tongue and groove panels, But cutting the sheets with the Festool on the guide rails made it easy cutting. Another plus was cutting the bevels with the TS55.

The ramps were covered with Indoor-Outdoor carpeting from HD
.

This performance will showcase TWO of my boxes at once!
The "Knock-Knock Box" AND the smaller "Coinsumer"!
(Thanks for that name suggestion gma2rjc!)
I will be dressed up in wizard garb and will mime the performance and sync it to this song. It will likely lose a bit of quality when i paste it to the video, so this is the best way to hear it. Use headphones!

Music Credits:
Tommy----lead guitar! (Thanks Tommy, rippin' work, as usual! You're the best!)
Me----vocals, bass, drums, chimes, tambourine, 12 string rythym guitar. (punched in (recorded) on my laptop no less!... lol)

Stay tuned! Video to follow soon!

I am just finishing up this project, so I thought I'd post some pictures. I did the downstairs portion of this about 5-6 weeks ago, and was waiting for grad-school to slow down so I could move on to the stairs.

Downstairs, I pulled the cheapo baseboard and replaced it with a decorative 6" version. I put a chair rail at 36" above the floor. Using colonial molding, I used the base dimensions of 24" high x 18" wide 'panels.' This gave me 3" above the new baseboard, and 3" below the chair rail. So, I obviously spaced the 'panels' 3" apart. It is all painted in semi-gloss white. I had to repaint all of the other trim around the doors, because it looked dingy compared to the nice, new paint.

I started working on the stairs on Sunday. Same chair rail and molding, with same spacing, but instead of baseboard, I just went off of the stringer that was on the stairs. It needs another coat or two of paint (notice the blue tape), but for the most part this is what it will look like.

We still need to decide what color we want to do the walls above the waincot, then get scaffolding and do that project (ugh). I also want to put some decorative molding/casing around the entryways, and maybe some nice decorative caps above the doors. Not sure, one thing at a time. I wanted to finish this wainscot, because the dining room is getting torn into next week.

A little background: This is my first house (I'm 26), I've never done ANY home improvement projects and...well this is my first renovation project. I bought a house with a NASTY laundry room and no washer/dryer. I realized at the time that if I put in a washer and dryer, I would NEVER be inclined to renovate the room. Being from a DIY car community, I decided to attempt a renovation "on the cheap". I borrowed all the tools (tried to return them when possible), shopped around for clearance items, and used coupons and lots of price matching :)

The original laundry room had a nasty vinyl floor as seen here:

Scraped the floor only to find a tile floor underneath!

Floors level? Oh well.. tile on!

Finishing grouting:

Enlisting some cheap paint labor (girlfriend):

And DONE (HVAC cover isn't back on in the pictures)....Granted, I still need to install the utility sink and paint the roof... but at least I can wash clothes.

My total flooring and paint budget:
Scraper - 20
Tiles - Clearance .88 cents a square foot ($88)
Mortar - 20
Grout - 16
Tools - 11
Tile cuts? - FREEEEEEBIE @ lowes
Bucket - 2
Paint - 16
Misc Supplies - 6
Total: Under 200 bucks.

Next project I'm going to destroy and renovate my downstairs bath. First shot @ plumbing! However, at least I can say I've done tiling now.

I've always pictured any kind of demolition as being fun and a fairly easy job. What I did NOT take into account is the work required to move the debris into the truck, then unload it to the dump after, essentially having moved every piece at least 3 times.

Basically the basement in the house I bought was very 1960's style, plain blue carpet, paneling, and a final touch of mold. It also had a ceder closet and a 2 pc bathroom. I don't think that bathroom had been cleaned in at least 1 year.

So, I decided I wanted ALL of it out so I can just redo it from scratch how I want. Yeah... paneling was easy to remove, but it was installed over drywall! At first I was just going through with a crow bar until I realized it was juts making way too much dust, and a pain to cleanup.

So I modified a jig saw blade so it's just the right size to cut through the drywall. I cutted sections so I can punch out bigger pieces.

The insulation was all old and falling appart as I touched it, and the vapor barrier was like seran wrap, rather flimsy. To make matters worse, they put tar paper too! The studs were 2x2's and were nailed against the brick foundation.

After about 2 weeks of work (I work full time so only put in a few hours per day) it's done, and today I went to the dump.

Some pics can be found here.

Next step is to setup my patch panel and setup my servers. I'll put them on top of some of the decent condition 2x2's for now, but I plan to build a server room to house them in a proper rack/shelf.

The tricky part with demolition is, you can't just take a sludge hammer and start hitting. You don't know what's behind there, and like when working near the windows, had to be very careful I don't rip the whole window out with it, so had to confirm nothing was nailed against the frame or anything.

My dad had helped me remove the ceder closet and washroom a month or so ago, and he really made me nervous, hitting everything in every direction and pulling on anything mindlessly. The water main along with other piping was RIGHT there, and there was a junction box that had quite a few circuits in it that I had to keep track of and cleanup. I still need to fix the two plugs in the basement as right now they're just hanging there. I may install them on the joists, or just take them out completely and put two junction boxes instead. I also need to change those light fixtures to plain socket types as the recessed style ones there seem to block lot of the light from spreading.

It's fun owning a house. The limitation is money though, I want to build the server room now, but totally don't have that kind of money now.
