Is this legal??

I had several contractors come out and give me "free quotes" for replacing sub floors in my newly purchased home. I also needed some plumbing and electrical work done, so one contractor in particular said that he would bring his guys to also give me a free quote. Well after waiting several weeks for their quote I had decided to go with this particular contractor. We had discussed what I had wanted done but I never signed a contract. I never even gave him a start date.

One evening a friend from church who works for a contractor came to visit and said that he would do the plumbing at half of what others plumber were charging me and would lay my subfloors for free minus the cost of supplies. Since he was experienced and was offering a great deal, I decided to go with him.

After I told the contractor that I would not need his services, he accused me of using him and has sent me a bill for coming to my home twice (once for the subflooring and once with the plumber and electrician). He doesn't believe that a family friend wasn't going to charge me. He is threatening me with a civil suit of I don't pay. According to several friends, verbal agreements are not valid in the state of NJ.

Do you think he can actually do this?

I tried to save money on my first home and now I may be sued!!!

I am resurfacing my fireplace with Tile and will be building the wood surround/mantle. See photo of design.

The apron (is that the right term for the wood centered above the firebox/below the mantle?) will have an arch and the arch will have trim on it. I've never done this before. This is my thinking -- please correct me if I'm crazy...

I'll cut a rectangular piece of oak plywood for the apron then screw a 1x6 oak board to it, draw on my arch and then cut both the apron and the trim piece. I'm wondering what will be the best tool to do this cut. I'm a gal and don't have the upper body strength you guys do so I really need to depend on a good power tool and not my brute strength .

I really have no one I can ask this question of so I asked someone at Lowe's. I'm not certain it is a good answer though. He said to use a jigsaw. What do you recommend? Suggestions? Thoughts? All is greatly appreciated! TIA Roxanne

Good Morning,

My wife, (the great doubter lol) wants to wait until after the holidays to begin our reno. (honestly can't doubt her for it) So we are going to do a temp fix and paint the living room/dining room until after Christmas and our cruise. In the past I have almost exclusivly used Behr paint and haven't had any problems. We found a new paint Vasplor (sp?) and bought some sample cans in the colors we were thinking about. The sample cans didn't cover NEARLY as well as my Behr. Question is can I get the Behr in the Vasplor color card? Or is there another paint that works better than Behr. I KNOW everyone will have their own opinions, and we all know opinions are like ____________ everybody has one. But I generally go with the popular vote, at least until I try it and it doesnt work for me.

Thank You

Hi,

We are considering buying two used fiberglass doors at a local ReStore to replace our existing double doors. Both of the doors are hinged the same way, so one will need to be reversed.

Two questions:

1) is it possible to trim fiberglass doors so that they will fit in the existing doorway, or would it be better to re-hang the doors?

2) is it possible to remove a lock set from a fiberglass door and fill in the holes - and have it look like nothing was there?

3) Bonus question: anything else that I'm not thinking of?

Thanks,

Alright so i plan on redoing my garage now that i have my 8k government check. Anyways, i want to refinish the floor, and was thinking about using some epoxy type stuff that i can pick up from home depot. I also need to install new lighting in the garage as there currently is none.

Any suggestions on the epoxy for the floor, or tips from someone who has already done it?

What about the lighting, i was just going to go with a bunch of fluorescent lighting that i could find on craigslist or just pick up at home depot. Any suggestions or ideas on that?

I also have another issue where the washer and dryer used to be in the garage i'm assuming, they are now in the first room you walk into from the garage. Thing is, there is a long vent running from the inside of the house, to the garage, along the floor all the way to the far wall where it hooks up to a vent.

Should i just build a box around the vent and have it go up into the ceiling, cut a hole in the roof and mount some kind of a vent box there? What options do i have for venting the dryer? I just don't want to have this long silver circular vent thing running along the floor of the garage.

Any other ideas or suggestions for the garage?! I've got a small closet also which i plan on putting a door on, but besides that don't really have many other ideas.

The whole garage already had drywall, i plan on repainting that and maybe putting a window air conditioner in, maybe a flat screen out there to watch sports if im working the garage, definitely a stereo...what else am i forgetting!?

Thanks guys!
