Spackling Roof Eaves

Hello! My name is Grady Johnson and I'm a professional painter, and today I represent expertvillage.com. Now we're going to talk about spackling. Whenever you're spackling the exterior eaves on your house, you've got a couple of things you want to look for. There are flat cracks that you may have caulked but still look like they're dished out a little bit. That's because caulking when it dries up does that, especially on a flat crack. There will be some spackling up under the eaves, but you're going to find the most important stuff is right out here on the fascia. You can see here we have a couple little holes. As we go along, you're going to find a lot more of them. And there will be few cracks in the wood as well that didn't flatten out. We use the spackling to flatten all of that stuff out before we do our sanding. Just go ahead and get your spackling open. Just pop it around the edge. Pop that top off of there. Once you pull the top off, you want to get just a little bit of spackling on the end of your knife and just kind of curl that up into a little ball. You want to just get a wad. Just put it right there on the end of your knife like this and just cram that right up in there and just even it out. You see these ridges here? They're not going to matter that much with spackling because we're going to be able to sand those out so just fill the holes up. Just grab another wad, get it right on the end of your knife. You just cram that into those holes and smooth that out a little. The flex blade helps you get that out there. We're going to put a line all the way around the end of my knife. You see I'm building that up on the end. Now we're going to put that into these cracks. Now you don't want it all built up real high, you're going to have do a lot of sanding. Now you can see as we're working, the knife blade leaves little ridges. It's not caulking. Caulking those ridges are a disaster and they look awful, but with spackling, if you leave a few ridges those are going to sand out nice and smooth. Just don't leave real deep ridges, otherwise you've got to do a heck of a lot of sanding. Just remember you really can't mess up as badly with spackling as you do with caulking because anything can be sanded out and respackled if it didn't work out right. Even that on out and then all these little lines and ridges will sand out. Alright, now we've got a little bit more work to do. There's a lot of fascia here. I'm going to bring down this crack, which is kind of long, and get all these little spots. This is how you do the spackling on the exterior eaves of your house.
