Prime Roof Eaves for Painting

Hello! My name is Grady Johnson and I'm a professional painter, and today I represent expertvillage.com. Now we're going to talk a little bit about priming our exterior eaves to prepare them for painting. Now, when you're priming, these primers dry extremely fast. Whether you're painting in oil or latex. Remember if you're painting with an oil based paint, be sure and use an oil base primer. Otherwise, use a latex base primer like I'm using today. Primers are very, very important. Especially on something that gets the amount of rain water that and exterior eave is going to get. Priming is very similar to painting, but when you're working with primers remember they dry very, very fast, much faster than paint. Therefore, it's important to really work it. When you're painting, you're going to find you're going to need to get really really sharp lines, but when you're priming just get close with that line. Don't try and take it all the way in. Save yourself a little bit of time and really move the paint. The key is to ahead and get a good loaded up brush. Remember we're using a latex primer because we are working with latex paints. This is going to ensure that it does stick properly. Go ahead and put your primer on there and get it started up in the corners. When you're working it just be sure that you really lug that up on there and move it because this stuff is going to set up pretty quickly. You don't have to worry about covering as much. Now you want to do the all sides of this. On the inside and all the way of the underside. Once we have all of this interior painted. You just want to get the paint on there and then even it out. You do that by pulling out the lines. Now remember when you go on it leaves a mark and when you pull it off it takes that mark off. Pull that all the way down. We're priming this completely with this primer because this will dry with a finish that will really take the paint well and it'll help us cover it. Since our eaves are going back white anyway, it's going to cover just fine. Alright, you don't want any sags. A sag is when it's all painted but the paint is still kind of running down so you want to prevent that. You just even it on out and pull out all of those lines. Again, my brush is dragging so I want to go ahead and get some more paint on it. You can see working on the top that we got little urns all along here. These are just little drips coming off. We want to work those out because we don't want those to set up on us. You'll actually be able to sand this primer a little bit if you need to. You don't want to of course and you're probably not going to have to worry about it when it's up high like this, but if you do have to you can sand out an old runner or something like that. Now that's not something you'll be able to do on a finish coat, but you can do that with a primer. That's why we use it. It is sandable and it is really good for putting a finish coat on. Now we want to bring up these bottoms. We got that all done. Be sure before you move off of here, before you stop in this area, everything is covered. If you have to lap over a little bit, feather that out so it'll cover up. Well we're ready now. We're going to ahead and move down and prime the rest of the eaves, but this is how you prime the exterior eaves on your house.
