How to Protect Boats from Fires

Hi. I'm Albert Hedgepeth with Expert Village. Today we are going to talk a little bit about boat maintenance. Three really important things that all boats should have are a fire extinguisher, a CO2 alarm and a fire alarm. These are going to keep you alive if anything on your boat is running improperly or if there is a fire on board. This is going to give you the option to put it out if there is a fire; which will be very short lived since fiberglass is a very quick burning substance. One of the things you want to do with your fire extinguisher once a year is make sure that it is full and make sure that it is pressurized. You can always have these things refilled at a filling station or you can just go ahead and buy a new one. These things usually come with a mount so that you can mount them someplace on the boat so you can easily access it, like the engine room. Although its probably not the best idea to place these in the engine room just because if a fire breaks out there you are not going to want to go diving into the fire to find your fire extinguisher. CO2 alarms and fire alarms can also be placed in the engine compartment itself. This will eliminate and give you an early sign of any fire or CO2 building up. CO2 alarms are really important, especially in the cabin area because this is where people are breathing hanging out cooking eating dinner and spending social time. One of the most important things to have is that CO2 alarm, just so that you are safe and so you aren't breathing in toxic fumes. The second important thing, probably even the first, is a fire extinguisher. If you've got a fire on board it's one of the few ways to put it out. There is nothing worse than having a fire, seeing a lot of water and not being able to use it to put out the fire and watching your boat go down. So if you put these three items on your boat most of the time you are pretty safe.
