How to Paint Stripes on a Wall

Hello, my name's Melissa Schenk and on behalf of Expert Village, today I'm going to teach you how to paint a room with stripes. In this clip, it's time now to paint your stripes. I'm getting very excited here. You'll soon see the finished product, but this again is another very important part. Now, when you're painting your stripes a couple of things to keep in mind. As you'll see, on our walls, I like to put tape on the bottom, on the baseboards of my room, but I don't put tape on the top portion of the wall heading towards the ceiling. What I like to do is freehand that. So you're going to want to take your paintbrush and in this case freehand the top and you'll want to edge the bottom of the baseboards there, but you want to make sure that you don't go outside of your line and that you don't use your roller and either your paintbrush or your roller and when your going down the edges of your tape be very careful about this because you don't want any bleeding underneath that. So it's very key. A little trick is if you can just go over one spot just go over the tape once instead of rolling over and sort of squishing the paint underneath the tape. It's going to really help you. Also, something else to keep in mind, very important, sometimes when you're painting a wall, you put a lot of paint on your brush and you spread that out on your roller. In this case I wouldn't recommend you doing so. You want to have a minimal amount of paint on your roller because you don't have a lot of space. You're just dealing with a small area, so you want to be very careful. Of course, the middle is fine, you've got some leeway there, but when you get to the edges, if you can just try to go over that spot once, you're going to really help save yourself in the end.
