How to Paint Base Board

Hello! My name is Grady Johnson and I'm a professional painter. And today I represent expertvillage.com. Now, I want to talk a little bit about painting the baseboards on an interior paint job. Now the baseboards are the very last thing that we paint because it gets real dirty here next to the floor. A lot of places today are carpeted or you will find hardwood floors or tile floors like I'm working over today. The main thing with any of this work is to be sure you clean it up as good as you can. Really dust it down. Wipe it all down real good. Sand it. And, get it as smooth as possible. That way when you're doing the work all those little hairs and junk that get into the work, aren't going to be such a bother and you're not going to get as many of them. So when you're first cutting your line you want to go ahead and throw out your line right next to the top of the work, up near your work, and give yourself a little paint to work with. Then, take and even that line out and make your line out of that. All right and we're just going to bring up the top of the baseboard first. Bring it down to where we want it. Then, bring up the bottom. Again, run that line. It's very important not just to run a big bead down on here, on the bottom par, because gravity's just going to roll that onto the surface of the floor. That's going to be very ugly. So be sure you cut that bottom line high first and then work it down. I want to be sure I don't have too thick a line so I can cut it in. Great. Now once you have that done, it's just a matter of evening it up. Remember, when I come off, I'm going to take that mark off. That evens it up. Now this is a hardwood floor, so we're going to cut right into the wood. If you have carpeting it has a lot of little hairs in it that can get picked up by your brush. So you want to keep an eye on that. Now if you're going to tape the edge on the floor, again use that blue tape. But you want to cut it in like I'm showing you today even if you tape it to be sure that you're not getting a lot of ragged lines or paint rolling up under the tape. That's what happens when you lay a lot of paint on a paint line, on a tape line I mean. That paint rolls up underneath the tape and you get those little ragged edges. So be very careful even if you've taped the area to paint it the way that I'm showing you now by cutting in the line. I'm going to go ahead and take this baseboard on down. But these are a couple of pointers and tips you want to keep in mind whenever you're painting the baseboards on an interior paint job.
