Step 1:
Enjoy the aroma of cocoa bean mulch, but only if you really like chocolate. Some have reported the scent to be wonderful, while others found it to be overpowering. The scent typically lasts a few weeks.
Step 2:
Know that cocoa bean mulch is provides nutrients beneficial to the soil and provides insulation to roots in winter and summer. The sun also doesn't cause cocoa bean mulch to fade in color. It actually darkens with age.
Step 3:
Plan to water the mulch after spreading it. Cocoa bean mulch is very light, but watering it will cause it to curl and interlock with other pieces. This will prevent it from blowing away.
Step 4:
Prevent mold in cocoa bean mulch by spreading just a thin layer. If you like a thicker layer of mulch, plan to rake through the cocoa bean mulch periodically to keep mold from growing.
Step 5:
Benefit from cocoa bean mulch's natural ability, due to its texture, of keeping snails and slugs away from your garden. It's also weed free and deters termites.
Step 6:
Realize that cocoa bean mulch is expensive and may only last one season. It also contains theobromines, which can be deadly if eaten by dogs. Users have also seen white worms in the mulch, particularly after rainfall.

Start making your own cocoa bean mulch by obtaining discarded cocoa bean shells from a chocolate factory. There are also commercially available cocoa bean mulches.

Tips & Warnings

If you own a dog, it's probably best not to use cocoa bean mulch at all. Although cases of dogs dying from ingesting cocoa bean mulch are few, it is still a real possibility and not worth the risk.
