How to do a Righting Pry in Canoeing

The low brace is a very effective way to...Say you have a flip toward your on side, but in a canoe you have an achillis heel, which is your off side. There's no easy way to do a brace on your off side. You can do a cross low brace, which is really a contorted move and doesn't work for many people. But you can do a couple things on your on side to prevent a flip on your off side, and the main one's called a righting pry. To do a righting pry, what you're going to do is place your paddle in the water in the pry position. Instead of placing it back here as you would for a normal correctional pry, you're going to place it right next to your body so it's more vertical. You have your top hand out over the gunnel and I've got my blade buried pretty deep in the water. It's important that your blade is very deeply because it only works as long as your blade is in the water. The minute your blade pulls out of the water like this, that's when your friends get to watch a spectacular flip to the outside. For righting pry, if I'm leaning toward the off side and I start to lose my balance, what I can do is this. I used the pry stroke; I used the leverage of the paddle to basically pry myself back up right. If you get good at it and quick at it, you can sometimes do a righting pry in a situation where you're losing it. But again, you've got to make that you have your blade all the way buried deep in the water. If your blade isn't deep enough and it pulls out...bye bye. That's the righting pry. Good luck!
