How to Change an Oil Filter

Hi! My name is Nate McCullough on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip we are going to talk about one of the maintenance items involved in a major tune-up or vehicle overhaul. This step we are going to talk about is placement of the vehicle’s oil filter; properly removal and installation techniques. First thing I like to do is get my new filter out of the box. The filter you will notice will have a rubber 0 ring around the top of it; that is the sealing surface. The rubber 0 ring is going to be dry from the factory. The first thing we are going to do is take a little bit of oil and lubricate the 0 ring around the top of the filter. You are going to want to use clean oil for this. You don’t necessarily have to use a whole bunch. There we go. Once we’ve got that lubricated, I am going to place the cap back on my quart so that I don’t spill it all over myself. We are going to set this guy out of the way over here. The location of the engine’s oil filer is going to vary pretty widely depending on make and model and manufacturer. This particular one happens to be a toughie. It is located on the rear side of the engine approximately half-way up towards the cylinder head. You are going to want to reach up through this direction, like so and get a good grip on the oil filter. The oil filter is going to be removed by turning it counter clockwise. You are going to want to make sure you use a large drain pan and keep your face out of the way. Oil can be kind of hot unless you’ve let it sit for a decent amount of time. The oil filter is going to be removed by turning it counter clockwise and that is that. We have our filter off, so go ahead and extract it. That is our old oil filter. We’ve already pre-lubricated our filter gasket. We are going to slide our new filter up taking care not to scrub it across any of the possible dirty surfaces on the engine. The filter is going to seat on its mating plan for the oil and you are just going to turn it clockwise to get that filter back on. Once the filter 0 ring has made contact, you are going to want to turn it a half a turn. That’s all the tighter the oil filter needs to be. Do not, I repeat, do not use an oil filter wrench to install your filter. As the vehicle operates, that seal strength is going to intensify and you may not be able to get your filter off again the next time you need service if you install with a wrench. There you go. That is installing your vehicle’s oil filter. Hopefully yours is in a mildly better location.
