Ford Explorer & Mercury Mountaineer: Removing Evaporator Core & Blower Motor Box

Here we're demonstrating how to change a heater core on a late model Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer. In this step, we're going to talk about the proper service procedure for removing your evaporator core and blower motor box from the vehicle. The assembly that has to come out, is this piece here. And, this is all going to be one connected piece when we remove it. It has three bolts that hold it on. One located here. One located here. And, one just identical to this one approximately eight inches straight down. Now, we have to remove this box in order to gain access to three bolts that hold the heater core box to the firewall. Those three bolts are not accessible without removing this assembly. Now, you may need to take off a few other components. This stuff may need to come out, depending upon the particular vehicle you're working on. However, we're just going to pull the bolts and see if we can get it out. You're going to want to unhook some of electrical connectors. Unhook all the ones you can get at, while you can get at them. We're going to start off here with our pressure valve. Be careful with this kind of stuff. This Bakelite plastic is extremely brittle and you can break it real easily. From there, I'm going to reach down and unhook the blower motor. Once you have those two devices unplugged, you can take and begin removing the bolts. Alright. I've got my socket here with an eleven millimeter on it. I'm going to go ahead and remove this bolt right here. It's going to be your typical lefty loosey, righty tighty kind of bolt. Alright. I've got my socket here with an eleven millimeter on it. I'm going to go ahead and remove this bolt right here. It's going to be your typical lefty loosey, righty tighty kind of bolt. Alright. One down and two to go. And, I'm going to take and put this in my magnetic tray. Begin working on the second bolt. Alright. Set that one there in the magnetic tray. I'm going to get my long extension assembly to take and reach down at the very bottom bolt. Now, the very bottom one is going to look just like that second one that I took off. Alright. Got her down to the point it's hand tight. And, get my socket and wrench assembly out of there. And, spin it off. And, right there is number three. Ok. Now, that we have our evaporator core box broken free. We have all the bolts loose. I went and removed some of the components inside here. The washer solvent jug and the radiator overflow. We also had to disconnect the blow motor resistor. That was this connector down here, all the way down here in the bottom. Once we have all that stuff out of the way, we can take and slide the box out of the hole that it's in. Just take and move it backwards and help take care when working with this kind of stuff. It is made of plastic and can be damaged relatively easy. Just like so. That is the proper service procedure for removing your vehicle's evaporator box and blower motor box.
