The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that renovations and repairs of pre-1978 buildings must now be conducted using safe practices to protect families and workers from exposure to lead-based paint. EPA proposed the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, which requires contractors to be trained and certified in lead-safe work practices, in 2006. Painting your exterior and maintaining it is important, not only for curb appeal, but the paint on your exterior is the only thing protecting your most valuable investment from the elements. It will cost you more in the long run to repair damaged wood and if the exterior paint is in real bad shape it will take longer to prepare the substrate for the proper paint job.
