Not fond of changes (new sidewalk)

After buying this house last year I've been fairly satisfied with the neighborhood. Biggest complaint is that while I love my corner lot the busy, 2 lane, side street has a sidewalk on my property and I'm constantly having to pick up trash. I think most is thrown out of cars as it appears during the night. I REALLY hate touching someone else's trash, beer cans, candy wrappers, cigarette butts, even if I wrap a plastic bag around my hand. It's all disgusting. I'm in the process of filling the side yard with shrubs and yews to block sound and for privacy.

My front road is a very quiet street (so far).

Yesterday there was a notice on my door. Jan. 4, 2014 the city is putting a sidewalk down.

Maybe a short 2' picket or iron fence along the new sidewalk? But without something green to soften it a fence alone would be too stark for me.

Some jurisdictions prohibit fenced front yards. Might want to check on that.
