Dog bite

Wondering how many contractors, going into customers houses have been bitten?

Neighbor's Pit got loose, ran up to me as I was in my yard, chomped my arm and ran off. One canine tooth deep in forearm.

Dang, it hurt. Going into hysteria probably didn't help cause I misdialed 911 several times.

As advised, went to ER for antibiotics and tetanus.

The next night went to a Walk-in clinic as my hand and arm were swollen and painful. That Dr said he couldn't do anything for me and for a second I was thinking, 'it must be fine and I'm being a big baby.' But no, he said I had to be admitted to a hospital or risk septic infection and dying. I had a staph infection.

I'm fine one day, enjoying life, and now this guy warns me about death?

Not wanting to bother friends at midnight, instruction sheet in hand, I drove back to ER. They administered an IV drip.

What freaked me out was when the Dr ordered xrays to see if the tooth was still in my arm. The idea I could have been walking around with a strange dog tooth embedded inside me was a freaky thought. But no. No tooth.

Whatever that drip was it had a miraculous effect.

I'm sad that while my daughter is on vacation I had plans to surprise her and finsh stripping wallpaper and paint her water closet. Nothing got done. Well, healing. Healing got done.

Ouch! I'm sorry this happened to you Startingover! What a shock it must have been to be attacked like that. It's good that the IV drip helped though. Hopefully the neighbor does something so that the dog can't attack anyone again.

I just saw this. So sorry about the bite. Was the dog tested for rabies? Did you call animal control? I suppose the hospital would report a dog bite. In this area, there are police/sheriff/animal control logs & dog bites seem to happen more than you would think, especially from pit bulls.

The MD could have explained a little more. Regular clinics rarely give IV antibiotics. A hospital has the lab facilities to run a culture and do a quick gram stain that will show what the probable bacteria is, as well as give the antibiotic. The culture takes about 3 days but the gram stain results can allow them to put you on a broad spectrum antibiotic (covers a lot of types of bacteria). When the culture comes back, they can give you a more appropriate antibiotic if needed.

The Dr. may have been blunt because many people ignore infections & they can become cellulitis then blood poisoning (septic shock).

I hope you're doing fine by now.
